Protein Foods

Protein foods are another food group that plays a key role in growing and supporting a healthy body. There are many different types of protein foods, so oftentimes foods that are a good source of protein actually belong to other food groups too. For example, beans, peas, and lentils are considered vegetables but they are also protein foods! Milk, cheese, and yogurt are also good sources of protein and belong to the dairy food group. Other protein foods include: 

  • Meats like beef, chicken, and pork
  • Eggs and dairy
  • Seafoods like tuna, salmon, cod, and shrimp
  • Nuts like peanuts, almonds, cashews
  • Seeds like chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and quinoa
  • Beans like black beans, chickpeas, lentils, and soy or tofu

Like other food groups, it is helpful to have a variety of protein foods in what we eat so we can enjoy many different flavors and nutritious benefits different types of protein foods provide. For example: 

  • Meaty protein foods like beef, chicken, and pork contain B vitamins, iron, and zinc for energy
  • Eggs and seafoods provide healthy fats and vitamins to support our skin
  • Nuts, seeds, beans, and soy provide our bodies with fiber

Overall, eating a variety of protein foods with meals and snacks can help:
