Ways to Be Active for All Abilities
Getting movement each day is encouraged because there are many benefits to one’s overall health when they have an active lifestyle. Movement is not one-size-fits all and doesn’t have to be difficult for someone to experience the healthful benefits. All movement counts, and activities should be safe and enjoyable. To make safe and enjoyable movement possible, it’s okay to switch up your movement habits or try new activities. Whether you’re already finding ways to be active in your day or you’re thinking about trying something new that works for you, here are some tips:
- Start slow and go at your own pace to avoid overdoing it. If a certain exercise is pushing you too hard, listen to your body. A couple ways to listen to your body are by taking a break and catching your breath when you need to.
- Find a buddy. Being physically active with a friend can add joy and maybe even some laughter to your exercise.
- Try to choose activities that increase heart rate such as, chair boxing, rolling, walking, or your favorite dance move.
- Try fun muscle-strengthening exercises, such as adapted yoga or finding household items to move with.
- Try changing the range of motion. A person’s range of motion will likely change throughout their life, and many movements can be modified to better fit a person’s capabilities.
Lastly, remember to check in with yourself and be proud of what you can do!
